A bit of history: When COVID-19 first emerged in early 2020, it was the imposed isolation combined with my sadness that we could not gather to celebrate Passover, that the idea of the artists' Haggadah emerged. At that time we had no idea that this virus would kill over 6.12 million or that it would still be impacting the world today. However, it did lead to a collaboration between me, Susan Dickman, Berit Engen, and our fellow artists from the Jewish Artists Collective Chicago (JACC). As we set out to envision the manuscript that eventually became Out of the Narrows, the artists in our group shared a common goal: the desire to create a text rich in meaning and beauty that engages its readers both visually and thematically, and evokes in-depth discussions at Seders all over the world. We are happy to share with you the news that our daughter-in-law, Rachael, has initiated a project to help address the serious problem of wasted food in this country and elsewhere. (Did you know that something like 40% of the food we produce goes to waste?)
